Establishment

The Military Geographical Institute was established by law no. 8907 of 06/06/2002 “On the operation of the Military geographical Institute of Albania”

The Military Geographical Institute operates in line with the above-mentioned law.

Mission

The mission of the Military Geographical Institute is to provide geographical support of the actions of the military armed forces.

Main activity

The Military Geographical Institute is a military state institution, which carries out research and scientific works and design and production.

The Military Geographical Institute is responsible for land, maritime and air mapping of the Republic of Albania, and has the author’s rights for the generation and maintenance of the state geodesy network, in line with the defense and economic development of the Republic of Albania.

Services

The Military Geographical Institute through its Board of Geographical Information, provides technical and scientific opinion on generation, permitting and licensing of physical and juridical persons that carry out private activities in the areas of geodesy, mapping, remote sensing etc., which need to be given due attention and consideration in the legal procedures.

Institutional status

The Military Geographical Institute is a state institution and national mapping agency for Albanian geodesy and mapping (article 1). The institute reports to the Ministry of Defense.

Financing sources

The Ministry of Defense finances the Military Geographical Institute. The institute generates revenues from activities with third parties, and the distribution of these revenues is determined in a COM decision (article 17)

Organizational structure

The Military Geographical Institute has a Geographical information board, which is chaired by the director of the Military Geographical Institute. The board comprises members from: Academy of Sciences, Polytechnic university of Tirana Ministry of agriculture and food, Ministry of Territorial adjustment, Ministry of Environment, and 2 representatives from private mapping agencies. The composition, operation and the duties of the board are determined in COM decision no. 404 of 19/06/2003.

Salaries

The remuneration for participation in the meeting of the board for each member is 3000 Leke. The financial effects are met by the state budget approved for the ministries and institutions represented in the board (article 8)

Relations with other institutions

The Military Geographical Institute cooperates with the Academy of Sciences, and its institutions on themes for the studies, research, implementation exercise, and piloting in the areas of geodesy, geography, mapping and remote sensing.
